The Rolling Stones Versus The Beatles
The two most iconic bands from the 1960s emerged at the same time. Those groups were called The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Both bands came from England. In addition, these two groups spawned a movement that critics called The British Invasion. Other groups from this movement consisted of The Who and The Kinks. However, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in constant competition for the rock music charts in the United States and England.

The Influence of British Rock on Future Generations
The influence of British rock has been staggering both in England and in The United States. For example, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Stooges, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Oasis and Spiritualized have all cited British rock as a major influence on their sound. British rock was heavily dependent on the two guitars, bass and drums band structure. Additionally, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones became two of the most iconic bands of this era. Although The Beatles have broken up, The Rolling Stones continue to tour and record original music. According to many critics, The Rolling Stones are regarded as one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

The 1990s brought many great bands to rock star status in America, and even worldwide. Despite being considered grunge or alternative, Nirvana took the genre to mainstream rock. Hits included “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are” and “Lithium. The band formed in 1987, but did not make their mark until the release of Nevermind in 1991. The band had an untimely demise with the suicide of lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1994.
Just as Nirvana faded, Green Day, another alternative band formed in 1987, skyrocketed to fame in 1994 with the release of Dookie. With songs like “When I Come Around” and “Basket Case.” Their success has continued to this day, with their most recent release Uno!Dos!Tres!
Other top notch bands from the 90s include Stone Temple Pilots, Offspring and the Beastie Boys. More passive rock bands included the Dave Matthews Band and Weezer. Guns ‘N Roses continued to rock the US with the Use Your Illusion I and II albums. Metallica also continued to rock fans in the 90s.

The eighties were the decade of hair bands and one of the biggest bands on the block was Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi and his crew came crashing full force into the music world when they released the album, ‘Slippery When Wet’ in 1986. ‘Living on a Prayer’ was a phenomenal hit from that album that still gets crowds jumping to their feet and singing in unison when it is played as the encore song at Bon Jovi concerts today.

Guns and Roses was another hair band that rocked the 80s. Young people from all walks of life knew the anthem, ‘Sweet Child o’Mine’ that the rockers belted out and sent to number one on the charts. The album itself, ‘Appetite for Destruction’ also went to number one on the charts in 1988.

Heart is a band who’s major players are two women, Ann and Nancy Wilson, two sisters who belted out hit after hit during the 80s. They suffered a decline in popularity in the early 80s after enjoying success in the 70s. Around 1985 the band experienced a come back that had them becoming more popular than ever. Heart has been ranked in the top 100 greatest hard rock bands of all times.

During the 1970’s rock music became a legitimate art form. No longer bound to the rebellious 60’s, artists were able to discover their true voices and concentrate on making careers for themselves. Here is an overview of two of the greatest American rock bands of this decade.

The Grateful Dead

The leaders of the psychedelic movement continued to make music long after many of their counterparts hung up their tie-dyes and called it a day. Their LSD inspired jams caused a legion of fans to follow them around the country in order to experience the mayhem that was a Grateful Dead concert. Frontman Jerry Garcia began packing on the pounds later in the decade but continued to write some of the greatest music of all time. Many Deadheads feel that this decade represents the best music that this band has to offer listeners.

Aerosmith

This Boston based outfit took the world by storm with classic hits like Dream On and Train Kept’ A Rolling. Internal band battles would all but cause them to break up in the following decade, but the 1970’s found them creating music that was both raunchy and inspired. The chemistry between lead guitar player Joe Perry and lead singer Steven Tyler was reminiscent of the chemistry between Keith Richards and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.

Prior to the British Invasion of 1964, American rock ‘n roll consisted largely of surf music, R&B girl groups and boy pop idols. Influenced by the Beatles and others, however, American rock ‘n roll soon transformed itself into an edgier, beat-driven style that caught fire and remains alive and well a half-century later.

The Beach Boys’ legacy began with songs extolling the virtues of surfer girls and fast cars. With the introduction of the Beatles, Brian Wilson felt challenged and began to compose more mature, experimental music, such as “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations.”

Paul Revere and the Raiders began as a novelty act, but they realized their life-span would be a short one if they didn’t adapt to the changing rock landscape, and with solid hits such as “Kicks,” “Good Thing” and “Just Like Me,” they moved beyond “teenybopper” status.

One of rock ‘n roll’s least understood, yet iconic bands emerged in the late 60s as an experiment. Their first “radio-friendly” song, “Light My Fire” elevated them to heights unimagined, and the Doors, fronted by the Lizard King himself, Jim Morrison, became one of the most influential American bands of all time.

Making their debut at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were American forerunners of the “super-group.” Combining hard rock with folk and country elements, CSN&Y proved that seemingly mismatched styles could succeed.

Through the years, rock and roll music has changed tremendously. One thing has remained consistent, however; rock and roll has been a popular form of music since the 1950s. Rock and roll originated in the 1940s with African American blues, jazz and gospel music. In the 1940s the saxophone and piano were the lead instruments and the genre was called rhythm and blues. This changed within a decade, when the guitar began to lead. Soon, Cleveland, Ohio was known as the birth place of rock and roll music.

The name for the genre did not stick until the 1950s.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. The name is thought to have come from a few different places. Rock and roll referred to the motion of a ship on the ocean as an analogy to black spirituality. Early rock and roll artists included Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Little Richard. White musicians got on board with rock and roll in the 1950s, with the work of Elvis Presley. Bill Haley, Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly were also white artists involved in early rock and roll. Other artists made way for The Beatles and the British Invasion. Early elements of rock and roll music can still be heard in modern songs.

By the early 50s, rock and roll began to spread, thanks in part to technological advances in radio transmission, which could now be broadcast into rural and sparsely populated areas. The emergence of Elvis Presley in the mid-50s further popularized the genre, especially in the South. Presley’s mixture of country and R&B spawned an offspring of rock and roll that was coined “rockabilly.”

In attendance at a 1955 Presley concert in Lubbock, Texas was a 19-year old aspiring singer-guitarist named Buddy Holly. Is this new to you? Catch up here Inspired by Presley’s performance and style, Holly scrapped his country and bluegrass-influenced stylings and formed his own group, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, rock and roll’s first band. An almost immediate success, the Crickets were soon opening for more established acts, including Bill Haley and the Comets and even Presley.

Prior to the emergence of Holly and his band, musical groups had almost exclusively performed “cover” songs, or songs written by other artists or songwriting teams. Holly and the Crickets changed the dynamic by composing and performing their own songs, including such legendary rock and roll songs as “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue.”

Unfortunately, Holly’s career was ended much too soon. Only a year-and-a-half after recording his first album, Holly died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.
